YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka Opens Its Doors for Healthy Kids Day
A free community event to help families embrace healthy habits
On June 7, 2015, the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka will join YMCAs across Canada in hosting the YMCA Healthy Kids Day. Designed to help kids and families embrace healthy habits that can become a lifelong practice, this free community event will focus on fun and engaging activities, practical information and simple ways to be healthier in spirit, mind and body.
Across Canada, most children do not meet recommended levels of daily physical activity. Rising rates of obesity and related chronic disease tell us that getting kids active should be a top priority for parents, schools, and all Canadians. “Our children’s health is very important to us. The Y is there to support families – it can be a challenge for parents to do it on their own,” says Karen Pulla, Vice President of Health, Wellness & Community Recreation Programs, YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka. “On June 7th, YMCAs across Canada are opening their doors for free to the community to celebrate Healthy Kids Day. It’s a chance for parents to connect, learn about healthy habits, and get the whole family active together under one roof.”
Although the YMCA models and incorporates healthy practices into its programs and activities for children and youth year round, YMCA Healthy Kids Day places special emphasis on teaching children, youth and their families about exploring healthy living habits that will make a difference throughout the year.
The YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka will be hosting YMCA Healthy Kids Day on June 7th throughout Simcoe County and the District of Muskoka. All activities are free to the community, unless otherwise indicated.
FREE community activities include:
The Barrie YMCA will feature Family Yoga, Family Swim, craft & science stations, Family Bootcamp and more!

80’s Retro Day At Home

80’s Retro Day At Home

Being a child of the 80’s, I decided a few days ago that it would be a good idea to create a retro-themed 80’s day for my kids at home. My kids are 5 and 3 so I wasn’t sure how this would go over or if they’d even indulge me in my creativity, but I was pleasantly surprised to see how much they loved the experience!
The best part was that the whole thing cost me under $10.

Here’s how:

1) COSTUMES
I went into my kids rooms and pulled out all of their 80s style clothes. Leg warmers, neon pink shorts, a headband, and some jewelry for my daughter. A ‘surfer dude’ shirt, black headband and sunglasses for my son.
The tie and arm band that my son was wearing was from an 80’s party that my husband and I hosted long before we had kids! It brought me back to my good old days!

IMG_6866

Tip:
If you don’t have 80’s style clothing, you can go to the dollar store and get a bright coloured head band, arm band, and/or tie to get the kids into the spirit.

2) TREATS
I let the kids choose 1 treat to have as a snack for that day. So I purchase some 80’s treats from the dollar store, including a pack of ring pops, push pops and bubble tape as well as a box of Teddy Grahams from the grocery store.

IMG_6882 (1)

Tip:
Popular 80’s candy that are still available in stores:
Fun Dip
Ring Pops
Pop Rocks
Bubble Tape
Nerds
Teddy Graham’s
Fruit Roll-ups.

3) SCAVENGER HUNT
I hid 80’s themed toys around the house and had the kids find them. I wrote the name of each location as a clue, because my daughter is 5 and is learning to read. For older kids you can make the hunt more challenging with riddles.
To set everything up, the first thing I did was go through their toys to see which characters are from the 80’s.
We found a My Little Pony figurine, a Smurfs doll, a Garfield toy, a Supermario Dragon, a Ghostbusters Marshmallow Man, a Ninja Turtle, an Ariel Doll, and a Strawberry Shortcake and Berenstein Bears book. I made the mistake of taking a picture of my Scavenger hunt after they completed it, so I don’t know where all of the papers are 😦

FullSizeRender (7)

Tip:
You do not need to use toys for the scavenger hunt. Go on the computer and print up pictures of 80’s characters for your kids.

Character Ideas:
My Little Pony
The Simpsons
Alf
Garfield
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
The Smurfs
Fragil Rock
Muppet Babies
Care Bears
Rainbow Bright
Teddy Ruxpin

4) MOVIE TIME
After long deliberation my children chose to watch Honey I Shrunk The Kids while eating their chosen push-pop 80’s treat.

Tip:
Popular Kids 80’s Movies:
ET
Back To The Future
An American Tail
Who Framed Roger Rabbit
Big
The Never Ending Story
The Wizard
The Brave Little Toaster
Troop Beverly Hills
Tip: You do NOT have to purchase a movie. You can stream a movie off your computer.

5) DANCE PARTY:
To complete our evening we had an 80’s dance party. I went on YouTube and put on some classic 80’s dance songs that my husband and I like.
We first played dance freeze and then the kids wanted to to free-style dance. It would have also been fun if I got glow sticks for them and shut off the lights. I’ll save that one for next time.

Tip:
Popular 80’s dance songs:
Girls Just Wanna Have Fun: Cindy Lauper
Open Your Heart: Madonna
Celebration: Kool and The Gang
All Night Long: Lionel Richie
Let’s Hear It For the Boy – Deniece Williams

MAY FREE & CHEAP EVENTS (May 29-May 31, 2015)

tumblr_n4vlwozXbD1qjlzbdo1_1280

Hopefully I am not too old that no one understood me posting a picture of Justin Timberlake from Nsync. LOL!
I am now recovering from my Spring Fling event last weekend. The event was really fun and I got to meet some amazing Moms, Dads, Grandparents, and Kiddies! I loved meeting people who read this blog and are members of my Facebook group. It was very special for me! My 5 year old daughter told her teachers all about the event and how she helped me put together all of the swag bags. I think she was more excited about it than me!

I will definitely do another one! I just need to get my head back together again.

Now on to this weekend, for some reason there are a lot of FREE events happening. I am definitely not complaining. It just seems like there are more than usual.

Anyhow, I hope you enjoy the weekend!

Help Kayla Johnston

10526021_10154417473010080_4625080745326590066_n

Hello Parents,

This post is NOT about Entertaining Kids On A Dime. It is about an amazing mother named Leigh Ann Johnston (who is a part of the Entertain Kids Community) and needs financial help with her daughter Kayla’s illness.

Kayla Johnston is 18 yrs old, and became ill 2 years ago with a rare life threatening condition (EDS TYPE 3 AND SMA SYNDROME) Her bladder shut down, her colon motility slowed, and her stomache doesn’t work.

Here in Canada she has only been fixed her by band-aids. She uses a catheter to pee, and an enema to have a bowel movement.

The money raised will help her family with their costs of travelling to the MAYO CLINIC in the States to receive new treatment. They are leaving soon and it will be extremely expensive. Their goal is to raise $20,000 to help pay their medical bills.

I am asking the Entertain Kids On A Dime community if you can help out any way possible. Whether you can give $1, $5, $20, or $50… any amount will help this family!

Kayla is the type of child who worries about everyone else. She is active in volunteering for the Starlight Canada Foundation where she has raised thousands of dollars helping children with Cancer. Sadly this time she needs your help! Kayla is beautiful inside and out and is a real warrier.

Leigh Ann has also set up a Facebook Group to keep everyone posted on Kayla’s medical updates. You can feel free to join the group and stay informed: https://www.facebook.com/groups/supportkaylajohnston/

Here is the link where you can donate for Kayla!

Below is the video of Kayla’s Journey so far!
